
DeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her role in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run as Janet Wood. This was one of the roles she was offered after being selected for the pilot episode that followed. Janet also appeared in an episode of The Ropers in the year 1979. Following the show's conclusion, Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in the year 1984 following which she resigned from acting for a number of years. Acting was her first foray back to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer in a Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character who was based on her, voiced by an actress, was featured in the 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and also made an appearance in Living Single's final episode. Her work in the 2000s includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
