She is also the mother of three siblings and one brother. Due to her father's work as diplomat, the family relocated around the globe as they lived in countries like Germany, Japan and Greece. Harden attended Surrattsville high school in Clinton, Maryland after she had settled down. In the autumn of 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. She received a bachelor's degree in theatre that year. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts In 1988, in order to earn her MFA.
